Under the category of "it's about time", the AG rules 911 calls available to the public. Although I have typically obtained these tapes when requested, the "red tape" has been most burdensome. I have obtained these tapes to use in mediation presentations and in insurance coverage determination. Here is the Herald Leader story link:
The attorney general has concluded that the Whitley County 911 dispatching center violated the Kentucky open records act by refusing to publicly release 911 calls.
Clarence T. Hurst had requested copies of recordings of 911 calls that he and others made regarding a fight between a man and woman at Mossy Gap on July 7.
Assistant Attorney General Amye L. Bensenhaver said the dispatching center incorrectly claimed 911 calls are exempt from the open records law and could be released only under subpoena.
Bensenhaver said the dispatching center also violated another requirement of the open records act by waiting more than a month to notify Hurst that his request had been denied. The open records law requires notification within three days.
