Elsewhere but it started here: Applebees Protested Over Breastfeeding Prohibition

From the Mommy Blawg is a story protesting Applebees, with its roots here in the Heart of the Bluegrass over a mother breastfeeding her child.  I know it is late, but I got to my email late.

Eatin' Good in the Neighborhood?

Applebee's restaurants are the target of a nationwide protest to take place this Saturday, September 8, 2007, at 12:00 noon (local time), in a response to an incident that took place last June in Kentucky. While discreetly feeding her baby at an Applebee's restaurant, Brooke Ryan was asked to either leave or cover her baby's head with a blanket, in violation of 2006 Ky. Acts, Chap. 80 , which reads in part:

No person shall interfere with a mother breastfeeding her child in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be.

You can read all the details at Birth Without Boundaries, which is sponsoring the national event. However, I will summarize by saying that Lactivists do not call for nation-wide protests unless the response from corporate representatives has been less than adequate:

Shortly following the incident, Ms. Ryan retained the services of a lawyer who contacted Thomas and King, the company that owns and operates the Lexington Applebee's location. Nearly 2 months later, the company responded with a letter stating "we are considering keeping blankets in the restaurants for use by breastfeeding mothers that may not have them readily available,"...

Dear Kentucky Law Review,

I would like to relay a personal story about the Louisville Prosecutor. My father is a college Professor and I grew up eating stew that would last for the week. I knew Kristi Gray when she was the DPA and a personal friend. Currently, Ms. Gray (a former phone sex operator in Ohio who at one point thought about marrying an alien just so he could entry the U.S. illegally), is a Prosecutor in Louisville. For a copy of the letter stating Ms. Gray’s former profession just email me and I’ll send an attachment. If you would like a copy of the scanned letters, then I would need an email address to send letters to.
This cite doesn’t have a way to send attachments. Ms. Kristi Gray had been and might still be active in the Rev. Moon cult. She helps Rev. Moon and believes an ordinary man to choose her mate to wed in a mass wedding ceremony. The Student Service Corps is sponsored by Rev. Moon. The name is intentionally misleading to get unsuspected people to join. In 1995, Ms. Kristi Gray was cruel towards me and because I had too much information and we argued over religious reasons, she had me cruelly and falsely arrested and taken to jail and called in a psychologist from the Jail to get an interview of me at the jail. I was transported by a corrupt psychologist willing to do the bidding of Ms. Kristi Gray. I was taken out of the jail without my right to an attorney to the Hospital. The paperwork from the jail to transport me was never filed in (Frankfort) Franklin District Court. By not having that paperwork filed, I was prevented from having Franklin District Court schedule a day for a hearing and an attorney. The court didn’t have the paperwork to put on the court calendar and Ms. Kristi Gray left town to Ohio. Ms. Gray waited three days to contact my parents. Ms. Gray and I had just returned from Guatemala the month prior to that where she duped me into going which all it was about was Rev. Moon and brainwashing. Not contacting my parents immediately and the same day she had me arrested and taken to a hospital is a sign that she had something to hide to my parents. That is a sign of insincerity and that Ms. Gray had something to hide. If that were your daughter, then you would have expected that your daughter’s friend would have immediately contacted you that day to tell you that your daughter had been hospitalized. That is just the nature of a cult.
I was released from the Hospital in seven days. Ms. Gray’s Doctor at the Hospital planned to keep me longer, but the nurses at the Hospital decided to override the Doctor because I didn’t belong at the Hospital and the nurses were willing to be fired over it. When a nurse overrides a Doctor that is a big deal. I entered the Hospital on September 15, 1995 and the nurses overrode the medical certification from Dr. Barnhill and released me on September 22, 1995. That same day, Dr. Barnhill and Kristi Gray went down to a Lexington Court and filed a petition to keep me for 60 days. Thank goodness for the honesty of the Nurses at Eastern State Hospital because the nurses had already overrode their own Doctor at the Hospital and released me. It matters what kind of people that society has acting upon institutions. Eastern State Hospital had in it’s history had gotten into the bad habit of hiring people for staff such as Dr. Barnhill that would say nothing of abuses. Eastern State Hospital had individual (s) acting upon that Hospital that simply got into the bad habit of not doing paperwork on patients. In 2005, there was an estimated 10,000 skeletons discovered in unmarked graves with no documentation on 8,000 former patients. There are 8,000 former patients of Eastern State Hospital that have not been identified, yet. The death toll and the number recorded buried at Eastern State Hospital do not add up to the numbers actually buried there in unmarked graves. In April 2007, a burial ceremony was held to rebury 11 former patients that had been placed in one mass grave. The reburial gave each patient their own burial place. On the website entitled, “Naming the Unforgotten. Eastern State Hospital” there is data beginning with 1911 and ending 1945 of the deaths and the location of where patients were buried. The majority were not buried at Eastern State Hospital, but were sent back to be buried in their family burial ground. I counted approximately 400 former patients that had died at Eastern State Hospital and were recorded as being buried on the grounds at Eastern State Hospital. It is very important that individual(s) acting upon an institution either from within or outside file their documents in court and keep track of patients. It is very important to investigate each and every incident when failure to file court documents or missing court documents, or missing files occurs. Eastern State Hospital just got into the bad habit of hiring the same kind of bad Doctors that wouldn’t care or wouldn’t report such abuses as not even putting on the graves itself the name of the patient. It is questionable since the death toll and patients buried far exceeds the number by about 8,000 that the former patients buried on Eastern State Hospital were the result of a bad experimental side effect such as a stroke, seizure, heartache. I believe it possible that the large amount of unreported burials might be due to Doctors experimenting on patients and after the patient dies of that experimentation that the patient’s body gets buried in an unmarked grave. Doctors and Hospitals that didn’t write down names of patients, yet took detailed notes on “first” surgeries and research studies might have been in the bad habit of treating patients like guinea pigs instead of like patients. I’m so very fortunate that it is within my lifetime that I can witness such a great and significant change in attitude from that of indifference to that of dignity for the patients. With the new expected Hospital with the expected 130 million, it becomes less likely that patients will become lost and forgotten in the mental health system. In the 1980’s, (according to the website and other newspaper articles (archive))bodies were discovered in unmarked graves at Eastern State Hospital, but the attitude for the Lexington City Mayor had been that of indifference something like, “oh, just move the bodies.” After my experience in 1995, I contacted
various Officials not just in Kentucky but also California and New Mexico. I also contacted Reporters from Frontline. I had over a billion eyes looking on at Eastern State Hospital. In 2005, some Reporters with Frontline were on their way to Kentucky to interview a man that had been abused inside a Hospital and stopped off at the café that I worked at called, “Church St. Café” which is behind the San Felipe Church in Old Town, New Mexico. It was just a few months after workers discovered the bodies and Archeologists were called in.

In 2005, Wynelle Deese published a book entitled, “The Early Gatekeepers and excerpt from the book is:

“This historical novel is about the people who were involved in the creation and maintenance of a Medical School, Law Department and Lunatic Asylum. The Introductory Chapter occurs in 1906, when the politically controlled Lunatic Asylum reached its lowest state of decline with four employees being charged with murder. That chapter ends with a question of how did a state facility become so nullified, when it had been so lovingly created by earlier local citizens. The first chapter starts in 1817, with the early beginnings of all three Institutions, the people involved and their struggles. The book concludes in the final seventh chapter in 1960, when significant changes were achieved. The people have rarely been recognized for their dedication to these three Institutions, including many medical pioneers and outstanding legal authorities. While the Institutions provide the background, the book focuses on the people and patients whose vast dedication is now told after many years of research by the author.”

The problem with the Hospital began earlyon when there was a combination of people interacting between the Medical School and Lunatic Asylum. The Asylum, I believe became somewhat of a feeding farm for the Medical School experiments.

With the new Hospital it becomes less likely that patients will be abused, mistreated and
given only custodial care instead of offered patient services. The plan for the new Hospital includes that similar to a town-like facility and mini-mall in that patients
are given services.

I ran across a study done on 100 patients by Dr. Barnhill in 1996 (a Doctor that Ms. Kristi Gray seemed to know), the study was done on involuntary patients. If those patients were asked to recall that study and if he or she remembered giving “informed consent,” then I sincerely doubt that the majority would be able to recall. Often involuntary patients are disoriented, confused, delusional, yet these same patients were well enough to have given “informed consent” to participate in a medical research study is just a power that Doctors are abusing over their patients. That same Doctor that puts in a medical chart that patient is well enough to give “informed consent,” is then loading up that patient(s) system with powerful anti-psychotic medications and why? If patient was well-enough to have given “informed consent?” That same Doctor that is implying that an involuntary patient which is a patient that cannot leave the Hospital is well enough to give informed consent, but not well enough to leave the Hospital. Patients are often handed a blue brochure with Patient and Advocacy phone numbers and told by staff to get their own Attorney. How could a patient with blurred vision, pressured speech and being given anti-psychotic medications call on a telephone to provide their own legal representation? If I couldn’t, then it is doubtful that any patient could either. The same Doctors that claim that patients are well enough to provide informed consent are the same Doctors and staff that are expecting the patient to call around to find their own legal counsel. How medical research studies can interfere with the patients “in” treatment is that while that patient is experiencing disorientation that patient might later have nightmares about what really happened to him or her inside that Hospital. After I left Eastern State Hospital, I had a seizure on my Mom’s kitchen in her Condo. I also experienced high anxiety and while driving I had to drive myself to the ER because my heart was racing as a side effect from the heavy medication that I was forced to take. Even though I immediately stopped taking the powerful medications as soon as I left the Hospital in 1995 having briefly stayed there for seven days. Just in taking the medications for four days caused me to have severe side effects. I had never before taken such powerful medication. I had severe trauma and PTSD after that. I just wasn’t myself after that. I had never in my life had any experience with hospitalizations. Prior to 1995 and after 1995, I have never been hospitalized. Currently, I am a CMT working on my LMT. I’m in excellent health.

The reason why I bring up what Ms. Kristi Gray did to me because I had too much information on her is because I can finally have closure in knowing that I was right about Eastern State Hospital. In 1997, I brought suit and in my lawsuit I put that I wanted all money to go towards building a better healthcare facility. To quote Johnathon Swift, “He gave the little wealth he had, to build a house fools and mad. And showed by one satiric touch no nation wanted it so much.” I can have closure because with my help I helped to bring about a change in attitude. I drove to Kentucky in 1998 and spoke to as many people that I could find. I also drove to Kentucky in 2000 to help with the first annual Hatfield and McCoy reunion. I saw a photographer from People Magazine taking pictures of a newlywed Hatfield and McCoy couple. The sun was smiling that day on the hills of Kentucky. I met many wonderful people that really helped me believe that a change was possible. I knew something great was going to happen. Ms. Kristi Gray in 1995 showed me the worst of Kentucky and Kentuckians.

On September 17, 1995, just two weeks away from being pre-paid and pre-registered to take the LSAT, I was dumped out at a Hospital and in the middle of the night reported that two women carrying a brown Doctors bag left my room just as I woke up and that my knee felt like I had just been shot with a needle. I reported my attack to Hospital staff and asked to see a Doctor. I was told by staff that there were no Doctors at Eastern State Hospital on the weekends. Eastern State Hospital had no video security cameras. The next morning I found a way to leave the Hospital. I contacted my friend who worked at Children, Youth and Family for state government in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My friend documented my report to him that I was being detained falsely, mistreated and that
I had left the Hospital. My friend told me that he would immediately contact my family and he did. I then called the Lexington Police and told the Lexington Police about the abuse. The police just took me right back to the very same Hospital that I had just complained about. I have enclosed a document from Franklin District Court where Ms. Kristi Gray had trumped up a charge and had me arrested in Frankfort. Ms. Kristi Gray entered the Frankfort jail and called in a psychologist. It was Kristi Gray who at the time worked at the DPA that knew what documents needed to be filled out. If the police had thought at the time of my arrest that I needed to be hospitalized, then the police would have taken me not to jail, but instead to a Hospital. Ms. Kristi Gray then failed to take the documents to Frankfort District Court for filing. Ms. Kristy Gray wanted to leave me without representation, without an attorney, without a hearing at the Hospital forever. This in my opinion, is how people get lost in a system is because of the individual(s) acting upon an institution from within or from outside. It is crucial on who gets hired
at Hospitals, at the Prosecutor’s Office and at the DPA. What amazes me is that nobody
at the Hospital had reported those abuses because the Hospital just seemed to hire the same kind of mindset individuals. I see in my mind 10,000 beaming lights going up to heaven and I feel like I can finally walk out of that Hospital. I’m fortunate that the new Hospital will offer services to patients and that sought out the advice of former patients.
I plan to hopefully attend the grand opening of the new Hospital and to possibly get a photo-op with the Governor. People in Kentucky truly are beautiful people and want to do the right thing. Ms. Kristi Gray from Ohio just herself had problems related to alcohol
and a temper. All my personal letters from her our from Kristi Gray talking about alcohol and partying. I didn’t include all the letters just the letters that illustrate the double life of Kristi Gray. In rereading those letters of Ms. Kristi Gray it is in my opinion that Ms. Kristi Gray had an alcohol problem probably because she led a double life. I shudder to think what she might have done with the power that she had over the woman at the halfway house. The letter that I included is the letter from Ms. Kristi Gray
where she discusses her need to earn money for Capital Law School. I also found the
letter where Ms. Gray is relieved to have quit her job at the 1900 chatline where men call
up and the phone sex operator talks dirty. Ms. Kristi Gray writes, “I quit my job at the chat line. I’m so glad I’m done with that! I got sick of getting marriage proposals over
the phone from sick, perverted sleazeball men!” During this time, Ms. Kristi Gray confided to me that she got paid to have sex with men. As a personal friend, I tried counseling her and telling her not to continue with a very dangerous and risky occupation.

What employers I believe would like to see on a resume is a person doing volunteer work, but at the same time not selling themselves to men for sex. Ms. Kristi Gray hid
this and didn’t disclose this on her resume. After Ms. Kristi Gray, was an “alumni,” had her college degree, it is sad that Ms.Kristi Gray couldn’t have used her degree for work
that maybe didn’t pay as much, but was honest work and an honest dollar. I believe employers would like to see potential employees taking jobs with low pay and doing
minimal volunteer work rather than see a person with a college degree sell her body for sex to men, but have enough money to live on to have tons of volunteer projects. Does a woman that has sold her body for sex to men have the self honor to represent women in rape cases? Probably not. I believe Ms. Kristi Gray would not have the self honor that it takes in allowing herself to be in risky, dangerous situations and for putting up with these men that made death threats. Could Ms. Kristi Gray report such death threats? No. If Ms. Kristi Gray couldn’t report the abuses that she obviously received from these men, then it is doubtful that Ms. Kristi Gray would encourage other women to come forward. Ms. Gray worked in the arena of law and worked around intelligent people while volunteering, but at the same time sold her body to men for sex. The reason that Ms. Kristi Gray didn’t come forward after being a victim herself was because the police report would verify her employment and logically realize that Ms. Kristi Gray was heavily involved in criminal activity. This is truly sad because Officials such as Prosecutors need to have the experience, dedication, honesty, integrity and moral decency
in order to fully represent their client, the rape victim. The simple reason that Ms. Gray couldn’t have the integrity to represent the rape victim is because Ms. Gray probably thought the rape victim had it coming. I know firsthand that Ms. Kristi Gray was the type of woman that would rather be cruel towards another woman and punish another woman.
In 1995, I wonder and question Ms. Kristi Gray’s sexual activity. Ms. Kristi Gray confided in me in 1995, that two men hit her from behind and left her on the side of the road. Ms. Gray tried to cover what had happened by not reporting to the Police. Ms. Kristi Gray is a very conflicted woman that would rather not report abuses on herself and
didn’t report abuses on herself for the obvious reason that Ms. Gray herself must acknowledge. If a man tells a woman on a street corner that he will give her a jacket after
the woman performs oral sex, and the man doesn’t make good on the deal, and worse has two men hit the woman with a tire iron over the head, does the woman (who volunteer and works at DPA etc… really want to came forward to police? Probably not.
For each rape victim that comes forward, Ms. Kristi Gray is thinking to herself, “dumb.”
This is the often horrific experience that rape victims encounter by going forward to police. If not by the offender, then by women like Ms. Kristi Gray.

What society endured with Marcia Clark was a woman that lacked the ability to make
a better choice for herself. 10 years later…. O.J. Simpson was out with a book bragging about what he had done and having the audacity to use as an excuse that his former wife
somehow deserved it. Please see enclosed attachment of a 2005 case in which Ms. Kristi
Gray as the Prosecutor lets down the rape victim.

I believe that the reason why the rape victim was let down by the system was because the Prosecution, Ms. Kristi Gray, earned her money for Capital Law School by talking too dirty to men on 1900 numbers.

The past has a way of catching up with a person. The choice Ms. Kristi Gray made to earn money for Capital Law School might have gotten her enough money, but was it worth her reputation? The cost of a person’s reputation doesn’t have enough zeros at the end. I am proud to say that I myself have never engaged in any type of lifestyle that would cause another person to believe that I was a prostitute. All my W-2’s show is that while I was in college I worked as a waitress at Applebee’s, at Budget Rent a Car, and other minimum wage jobs or jobs where a food server gets $2.15 an hour plus tips. Ms. Kristi Gray might have been successful in having me cruelly and falsely labeled for a brief moment in time back in 1995, but I think it is what History will ultimately reflect. I helped to bring about a great and significant change in attitude. As a former patient of Eastern State Hospital, I’m proud that a new Hospital with a new direction and better services is expected to be built with the upcoming 130 million from the Kentucky General Assembly. I am also proud that I am able to deflect such a cruelty and false label given to me by Ms. Kristi Gray at Eastern State Hospital.

I believe that the people in Kentucky are willing to do the right thing if given the opportunity. I have not lost my faith in humanity despite a person such as, Ms. Kristi Gray. I only wonder what her other victims that are woman were forced to endure. I believe that the rape victims shouldn’t themselves feel like the criminal. Ms. Kristi Gray
lacks the mindset to protect the rape victim in feeling that way. Perhaps, will never know
the reason for the large amount of burials that don’t add up to the recorded or unrecorded deaths. Maybe someday inside somebody’s shoebox it will discovered- papers which reveal the truth about a person, individuals(s). I shudder to think that Eastern State Hospital might have at one point used woman for prostitution. Not all the bodies have
been examined, yet. It is estimated that the last body buried in an unmarked grave was
in 1945. I wonder what the examination of all of the skeletal remains would reveal. Perhaps, a person was dumped and buried in the 1990’s. During the earlier 1900’s,
there was a campaign to put an end to prostitution pushing white slavery not just on immigrants but on people born in the U.S. (white woman). The good old boy network
found places in their own cities instead of having to leave the state.

I am so grateful for the change in attitude from that of indifference to that of genuine concern and better services for patients inside Hospitals. I believe that the new Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky will be a role model for other States to follow. I imagine a Hospital built where natural light streams in and where portions of the Hospital is made with limestone. I imagine a place where patients are provided talk therapy with a great cup of Starbucks. I imagine a Hospital where patients are treated as equals. It matters who is in charge and who has power. There is also a letter written by Ms. Gray which I kept that I wished that I would have after receiving immediately broken off my ties to her. The letter is her telling me that she wanted to help out an illegal alien obtain U.S. citizenship by marrying him. She planned to leave the country to do so. I asked her not to tell me anymore because I didn’t want to know. Ms. Gray didn’t marry him, but I wonder based on her failure to file documents and to obtain false affidavits if she found a way to obtain false documentation for the illegal alien. If all people sympathized with illegal aliens, then the U.S. workers job market would be jeopardized and the salaries would suffer a sizeable decrease. There would be too much competition with foreigners. A person that would make comments to her friends in letters about possibly helping out an illegal alien gain illegal entrance to the U.S. is the same type of person that would not care about U.S. Americans being denied their civil rights. With the new Hospital in Kentucky I believe that there is hope. I’m looking forward to attending the ceremony the first day of that new Hospital. I thank God for allowing me to see the mercy in a cloudy day.

Sincerely,

Kristin Cunnar

(LOUISVILLE, Dec. 20th, 2005) -- It took two years to get a plea agreement together, but last April, Paul Beck went to prison for sexually assaulting two women. Now, six months later, he wants out on shock probation. But one of his victims stood up in a courtroom Tuesday and pleaded with the judge to keep him behind bars. WAVE 3 investigator James Zambroski was there.
This is really the story of one victim, a woman named Heather, who came to us about a month ago with a tale of how the system had failed her. From a two-year delay in her attacker's trial to lost DNA evidence to a plea agreement she wasn't happy with, Heather has felt shortchanged at every turn.
On Tuesday, she asked the court not to let her down again.
Paul Beck admits he sexually assaulted Heather and another woman. He's six months into a 5-year prison sentence, but wants shock probation because he says he has become a Christian.
Doug Zeckner, Heather's uncle, says Beck's prison conversion is suspect. "I don't think a short period of born again is really a good excuse.... I'm a Christian, but I think this is used as an easy out by a lot of people."
Beck told the court that his stay in prison has been a "fear-inducing experience that there is someone to answer to and to answer for."
During the hearing Tuesday, Heather said Beck's attack had left her living in a world of fear. "I want everyone who can hear my voice to imagine that, imagine living in a world of murky darkness, of unseen dangers, of disaster hiding behind every corner. That was the world Mr. Beck created for me."
Outside the courtroom, Heather insisted on showing her face as she sent a message to other sexual assault victims. "I just think they need to be prepared to know that it's going to be a long process, and just to hang in there."
Experts say some sexual assault victims choose to go public as a way of healing.
Dale Herink with the Center for Women and Families says going public is "a choice that, in this case, she is making to find her courage, find who she is -- reclaim who she is."
Beck's plea agreement required the Commonwealth Attorney's office not to oppose shock probabtion. His six months in prison has included sex offender treatment.
Kristi Gray with the Commonwealth Attorney's office says she doesn't know if the treatment was effective. "I haven't seen any reports from the treatment, so I don't know whether anything's changed."
One thing is certain: Beck will be released -- either now or sometime in the future; Heather just wants a little more time to get ready.
Heather says by then, "hopefully, I will have gone through enough therapy and counseling to prepare myself to get him out, or to deal with him getting out. I'm not ready for that today."
One side note: as the hearing began, Beck filed a motion on his own asking that our camera be removed from the courtroom. Judge Elisabeth Hughes Abramson swept that aside without argument, saying her court was open to anyone.
Just Abramson is expected to make a decision on Beck's shock probation in about a week.
